Alex Falcon

Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Udine

Alex is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Udine (AI Lab). He completed his PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, jointly held at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (Technology of Vision Lab) and University of Udine, under the supervision of Oswald Lanz (Free University of Bolzano) and Giuseppe Serra (University of Udine).
His main research interests involve the automatic analysis of multimedia data (video, image, 3D scene), with an emphasis on its connection with natural language. He was the lead organizer of the “Video and Image Question Answering Workshop” (VIQA at ICPR 2020) and he is organizing the “3rd edition of the Computer Vision For Metaverse Workshop” (CV4Metaverse at ECCV 2024). He regularly serves in the Technical Program Committee of several conferences, including the International Conference on Multimedia (ACM MM) and the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV). He has published several papers in international conferences and prestigious journals related to Multimedia and Computer Vision.

Text-to-Metaverse Retrieval: A New Frontier in Search

In recent years, the Metaverse has sparked an increasing interest across the globe and is projected to reach a market size of more than $1000B by 2030. This is due to its many potential applications in highly heterogeneous fields, such as entertainment and multimedia consumption, training, and industry. This new technology raises many research challenges since, as opposed to the more traditional scene understanding, metaverse scenarios contain additional multimedia content, such as movies in virtual cinemas and operas in digital theaters, which greatly influence the relevance of the metaverse to a user query. For instance, if a user is looking for Impressionist exhibitions in a virtual museum, only the museums that showcase exhibitions featuring various Impressionist painters should be considered relevant.

Through guided examples and hands-on activities, the lab session aims at providing an introduction to the tools which can be developed to address the novel problem of text-to-Metaverse retrieval.
