Konrad Schindler
Professor of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing ETH Zurich
Konrad Schindler received his Ph.D. degree from Graz University of Technology, Austria, in 2003.
He has been a tenured professor of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing with ETH Zurich since 2010. His research interests lie at the interface of machine learning, computer vision, remote sensing and Earth observation.
His passion is harnessing the power of modern, statistically based machine learning to solve real-world, large-scale mapping problems.
He has co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has won numerous research awards, including “best paper” prizes of leading journals and conferences.

Computer Vision and Machine Learning for Environmental Monitoring
Abstract:
I will discuss environmental applications of computer vision with neural networks.
The talk will present a series of projects in which we have employed deep learning technology to analyse images and map environmentally relevant information, such as height, density and health of trees, agricultural crop types, freezing and thawing of lakes, etc.
A focus of the talk will be how to select and design suitable machine learning approaches for practical data analysis tasks.
